Kanu students visit Makaliʻi

Updated: May 13, 2021

On April 30th, Kanu high school students went to Māhukona to see Makaliʻi while she is in dry dock. While there, they went over the parts of the waʻa they have previously learned about in their classes on Fridays with Nā Kālai Waʻa staff. Being able to see and touch the waʻa was a great hands-on experience, taking their learning from classroom to the deck of the canoe and hopefully one day, to the ocean swells aboard Makaliʻi.

The students also had the opportunity to participate in some of the dry dock work that staff and crew do to mālama Makaliʻi. This work of sanding and revarnishing, untying and re-lashing, stripping and repainting, are vital to the longevity of the canoe and the safety of all those on board when Makaliʻi is on the water again.
